If you are thinking about traveling to Dublin, Ireland, I would like to offer the following information about this beautiful city from first-hand experience. Having visited Dublin on three different occasions, I would describe this capital city as a place featuring both old and new attractions, a laid back atmosphere and a lively culture scene. No matter what season you travel to Dublin, you will want to pack something warm to wear at night when the temperatures are chilly as well as an umbrella or raincoat as the city does experience frequent soft rains. However, I promise that the weather will not put a damper on your pleasure because Dublin offers an abundance of cozy pubs, restaurants and attractions where you can enjoy yourself during the rain showers. Must See Attractions Dublin packs so many fascinating attractions, it would be impossible to see them all in such a short period of time. Some of these attractions you don't want to miss include Trinity College , Ireland's oldest university, which houses thousands of ancient and rare manuscripts such as the famous Book of Kells. Another must do is a visit to the 12th century St. Patrick's Cathedral. At this huge, magnificent church, you can see a great number of Medieval furnishings, musical instruments and artifacts as well as the burial chambers of more than 500 people, including those of Crusdaer knights and the famous writer, Jonathan Swift. You can learn about Ireland's fight for independence from England with a tour of Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison that confined many of the Irish rebel leaders. Whether you drink alcohol or not, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of Dublin's popular Guinness Storehouse. Watch how the beer is made and see amazing views of the city from the top of the building. Museums and Art Galleries If you want to know more about Ireland's extensive history, you can check the National Museum of Ireland's vast collection of objects that range from prehistoric fossils to Viking artifacts and vintage furnishings, clothing, tools and weapons. At the museum on board the Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship, you can learn about Ireland's Great Famine and the heartfelt stories of many of the Irish emigrants who sailed for America. Art lovers will enjoy browsing the collections of fine contemporary works at Dublin's popular art galleries, which include the Green Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art. Temple Bar No vacation to Dublin would be complete without a visit to Temple Bar, the city's famous cultural district. Situated in the city center, Temple Bar features numerous restaurants and pubs where you can enjoy traditional Irish music, dance and food. Day Trips The relatively small geographical size of Ireland presents you with the opportunities of several fantastic day trips from Dublin. In just two hours you can take a scenic bus trip from the capital city all the way across to the West Coast to experience the amazing Cliffs of Moher. Or, you can go south to Cork County and tour the famous Blarney Castle and its kissing stone. Closer to Dublin, you can enjoy tours to the preshistoric site of Newgrange or opt for a tour to the stunning Wicklow Mountains Money Saving Tips If you want to cut costs while visiting Dublin, a good way is to purchase an affordable hop-on, hop-off bus pass. This pass admits you into most of Dublin's major attractions, and with stops located throughout the city, you can hop on and hop off at your leisure. This bus pass also includes discounts toward many of the city's restaurants. If you want to save money on accommodation, many of the bed and breakfasts offer reasonable prices as well as budget hotels. |
